Lost Dreams of Separation

the sheets glow
in the afternoon sunlight
winter lasted longer this year

the stories they told us are
carelessly mixed with the
frightened wind outside

we hold each other
as we hold our dreams
in the palms of our hands

i dig my face into his shoulder
as he makes waves with
his hands
delicately bouncing the
sunlight off
the landscape
of his fingers

i close my eyes
the red warmth of the day
is trapped beneath
my eyelids
a few breaths longer

soon this gold
will dissolve
into dark blue

still
this day lingers
in our bodies
as chests raise softly
closed eyes
knitted dreams
somewhere together

Lights to a Promised Home

The lights will dim
as you walk alone
                down streets
                       that lead you to
                            a promised home

Should have seen it
from miles ahead
                now you feel
                       it slipping
                           from fists instead

You look at horizons
glumly from the shore
                what bad things
                      have you done
                           not heard before

Sit with me a while
tell me where you're from
               you must be tired
                      of ghosts from
                          whom you run

The curfew is over
still the streets are bare
              it doesn't seem
                      like the birds or
                             dogs will care

You should have told her
that you loved her once
            now she's asking
                   someone else to
                            the dance

The Station is empty
but tracks go somewhere
            trains still run over
                     souls looking for
                             lost things there

Will you find them where
you left them long ago
           or are you like
                    the rest of us
                            who'll never know

It was the end

It was the end
And we all stayed inside
With closed doors
And windows.
The emptiness outside
Tried to creep
Into rooms lit up
By open screens
And LED book lamps.

We didn’t know
We were preparing
All these years
To travel
Sitting at home
And still falling in love
And still loving friends
And still spreading ideas
And still discussing events
And still sharing songs
And still creating meaning
And still being human.

We didn’t know
After all these years
Of being angry
Of being indifferent
We would finally find the time
To be scared
And start thinking
For a future
We had willingly ignored-
A future
We weren’t at all prepared for.

It was the end
But it could still be a beginning.
